How did you learn to talk? Probably like me you learned to talk by repetitive action, listening to mum or dad or your siblings, hearing the sounds, watching their faces, watching how their lips and tongue move to make the sounds, You began to copy those same actions and sounds, at first you just make babbling noises that everyone loves… Continue reading “For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” ― Aristotle

Eyes are truly the most incredible and beautiful pools of delight! They say so much about a person, they reflect their inner most feelings and thoughts.
The face can be altered and enhanced by makeup and even surgery, but the eyes, the eyes remain the same….looking out at the world with a uniqueness that express the individual persona!
A person may age yet their eyes can still reflect a dancing youthful spirit full of colour and joy!
The eyes also will tell us when there is a grief buried deep and long ago, the eyes can truly hide no ‘thing’!
I started working yesterday on a portrait using for the first time coloured pencils to create a realistic outcome, I started with the eyes for the reasons mentioned above…You can have all else in a portrait correct but if you do not capture the essence within the eyes you will not truly capture the essence of the person, no matter how correct the likeness of your drawing or portraiture!
Working with the coloured pencils is a completely new medium for me! Having not worked with it prior in any form let alone portraiture, I can see now how versatile and reflective it is, allowing the build up of form through colour, layering and blending!
This is my first step toward working with soft pastel pencils and crayons in the future, I think becoming familiar with and mastering this medium will definitely give me the confidence to work with a softer and perhaps more complex medium in the future!
Lots of practice yesterday from 11am – 4pm and again last night from 6.00pm to 11.00pm.
That’s 10 hours of practice! okay so just a small dent in the required 10,000 but still I am moving forward!!
So here is the plan! I am an amateur artist; I am passionate about creating artwork but have been very lax in practicing the craft on any regular basis. I can draw and paint, I have a bachelor degree in creative arts and majored in sculpture from the University of Wollongong, but am I proficient? I would have to answer that with an emphatic NO!! …
